Gutters for the towns around Oldsmar
Our shop is in Oldsmar, and we cover the county from Tarpon Springs down to Saint Petersburg.
The housing changes a lot between Tarpon Springs and Saint Petersburg, from older block ranch homes to newer two story houses. Plenty of them still have the gutters they were built with, or no gutters at all. Close to the water, salt air goes after hangers and screws. Under oaks and pines, the trouble is leaves.
Flat yards in Clearwater and Largo hold water
Clearwater and Largo are the two big towns closest to our shop, and most of the ground there is flat. Water from a downspout does not run downhill away from the house on its own. It sits in a puddle by the wall and soaks in beside the slab.
The fix is getting that water out into the yard. That usually means a downspout tied into an underground drain, with a pop up emitter out in the lawn where the water can spread.
Salt air works on gutters near the water
Dunedin, Safety Harbor and Tarpon Springs all have homes close to the water. Salt carried in on the wind settles on a gutter system and works at the metal, starting with the screws and hangers. A gutter can look fine from the street while the hangers behind it rust loose.
So on a house near the water, we check the fasteners and the fascia before we call a gutter sound. Aluminum and copper both handle salt air well, and hidden hangers sit inside the gutter where they are out of the weather.
Oaks and pines fill gutters in Palm Harbor
Palm Harbor and East Lake have a lot of big trees over the houses. Oak leaves mat down flat in a gutter, and pine needles pack into a plug right at the downspout.
Once that plug forms, the next storm goes straight over the edge. Gutter guards keep most of it out, and the gutters still get cleaned, just far less often.
Older homes in Saint Petersburg need fascia checked
Saint Petersburg, Pinellas Park and Seminole have a lot of older houses. On an older house, a gutter that leaked for years has often soaked the wood fascia board it hangs on.
Hang a new gutter on rotten wood and the screws pull out under the first heavy load of water. We look at the fascia and soffit first, and we repair the soft sections before any gutter goes up.
